Frequently Asked Questions and Ohlone Student Services

¡Hola estudiantes!

Bienvenidos al español 101 (online!) We will have the pleasure of spending the next 16 weeks together as we work to develop your Spanish listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.  I’m looking forward to working with you all!

We will be using some great technology, such as Facebook, Quia, and WileyPlus, all of which will be very helpful for you to receive individual and group help with your assignments.  Don’t worry if you haven’t used these before. I will explain how to use each of these during our in-person orientation, and there is a series of short screencapture videos and pdfs (documents) that walk you through the programs step-by-step. Before long, you will be using these technologies like a pro! If you feel a little nervous about taking an online course, maybe you’d like to check to see if you are ready by taking this online course readiness test. https://lrc.sierra.cc.ca.us/dl/survey/OL-student-assess.html

How much time will I need to spend on my work?
You will need to spend about 9-14 hours a week on your course work. This will depend not only on your language acquisition skills, but also your comfort level with computers.  You will be working with websites, your text, wecam videos and many other resources designed to help you learn Spanish grammar and to improve your Spanish skills. I will be right there as we go along to guide you and answer your questions as they come up.

What Textbook do I need?
WileyPlus is our course management system where all of the online self-testing, chapter tests and video quizzes are located. This program comes with an interactive E-text (online version of the text book) Dicho y Hecho 9th edition. If you also want to have a paper copy of the text, paperback copies are available on line. There is also a reference copy in the Ohlone Newark library (the Cranium Café.)

Will I need to come to campus?
You will need to come to campus two times during the semester, once for an orientation to the course scheduled during the week before the semester starts both in Fall and in Spring. There are always two different times scheduled that you can choose between. NOTE: If you are taking the Spring section of Spanish 101B, you do not need to attend the orientation in January.

The FINAL EXAM is IN-PERSON and occurs at the end of each semester. The exam will be offered at two different times.

All of the other course requirements can be done online.

What should I do if I need some special accommodations?
If you should require any accommodations to successfully participate in our course, please contact Ohlone’s Disabled Students Programs and Services office at https://www.ohlone.edu/org/dsps/.

Are there any other online resources I might want to know about?
There are also several online student resources that you might find helpful.

How can I contact my teacher?
Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have. Facebook is my preferred method of contact: Profe Lemon. Messaging can reach me most places. You also can reach me using email: click here to email me.  I will respond to emails within 48 hours or sooner M-F and when possible on the weekends.

Once you have "friended" me on Facebook, I will add you to our Private Class Group. Please use the Group to post general questions, especially since many students will have the same question!
Finally, I am looking forward to helping you to become functional and fluent in Beginning Spanish.  ¡Vamos!
